Fort Hood Soldier Killed In Motorcycle Accident
On Tuesday, August 3rd, a 24-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Hood was killed in a motorcycle accident in Killeen, Texas. The soldier has been identified as Spc. Francisco Gilberto Hernandezvargas from New York.
The Accident
The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when Hernandezvargas was traveling southbound on W.S. Young Drive and collided with a car that was making a left turn. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with authorities. It is currently unclear if any charges will be filed.
The Soldier
Spc. Francisco Gilberto Hernandezvargas was a combat engineer assigned to the 91st Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood. He had been in the Army since 2017 and had been stationed at Fort Hood since 2018.
Hernandezvargas was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.
The Reaction
Fort Hood officials released a statement expressing their condolences to Hernandezvargas' family and friends.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Spc. Francisco Hernandezvargas during this difficult time," said Lt. Col. Neil Armstrong, commander of the 91st Engineer Battalion. "Spc. Hernandezvargas was a dedicated and hardworking Soldier who served his country with distinction. He will be greatly missed by the entire Iron Castle family."
A candlelight vigil was held on August 6th at the Fort Hood Memorial to honor Hernandezvargas and his service to our country.
